Sports Travel: The Seats, and the Week Around Them

The Masters, Monaco, Wimbledon, the Super Bowl and the 2028 Summer Games, planned end to end.

A sporting event is the one trip where the date will not move for you. The Masters is the second week of April whether or not the flights work, and Monaco is the last weekend of May whether or not there is a room left in the principality. Everything else has to be built around that fixed point, and the further out you start, the more of it you actually get to choose.

I book these through operators who have spent more than thirty years doing nothing but sporting events. That partnership is what gets you a terrace inside the Monaco circuit rather than a screen outside it, a hotel near the venue you care about rather than the last one with availability, and a straight answer about what is genuinely obtainable. 2028 Summer Games

July 14 to 30, 2028

The Games return to Los Angeles for a third time, after 1932 and 1984. Competition runs from Long Beach in the south to the San Fernando Valley in the north, which makes this less like booking one event and more like booking a fortnight in a city that has temporarily rearranged itself.

What makes it hard

Which venue you want to be near decides where you stay, and that decision has to be made long before the detailed schedule is published. My partners hold a large Los Angeles hotel collection, so rooms can be held close to the sports you care about rather than wherever is left over. The distances are the part people underestimate. Ticketing and hospitality both take months to arrange, which is why the dates get fixed first and the rest of the week is built after.

The week golf fans build a life list around, and the hardest ticket in the sport to arrange well. Badges, housing and practice-round access all move on separate timelines, and none of them run on the same calendar as a normal holiday booking.

What makes it hard

Augusta is a small city with a short supply of hotel rooms, so Masters week is largely absorbed by private house rentals and by resorts an hour or more out of town. Practice rounds on Monday through Wednesday are a different ticket from the tournament rounds, and for a first visit they are often the better days: smaller crowds, players on the par-3 course, and you can actually walk the property.

The Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee. Roughly an hour and a half west of Augusta, on a lake with golf on the property, which is the reason to choose it over a closer room in a chain hotel: the non-golf half of the party has something to do on the days you are at the course.

2027 Monaco Grand Prix

June 3 to 7, 2027

The slowest and tightest circuit on the Formula 1 calendar, run on public roads that are a town for fifty weeks of the year. It is the one race where the seat you buy changes what you actually see, because almost nowhere on the circuit gives you more than a few corners.

What makes it hard

A terrace above the harbour gives you the swimming pool section and the tunnel exit. A grandstand at Sainte Devote gives you the first-lap braking zone and very little afterwards. Yacht hospitality is the third option and it is the one that books earliest. Roads inside the circuit close for the weekend, so where you sleep decides whether you walk to your seat or spend an hour getting to it.

How far ahead should you book a sporting event trip?

Twelve to eighteen months for the Masters, Monaco and the Summer Games. Hotels in a host city sell out long before tickets go on sale, and for one-venue events like Augusta or Monte Carlo the rooms are the constraint, not the seats.

Can you get Masters badges?

Masters badges are not sold on an open market. They reach guests through hospitality programmes and licensed resale, and both are arranged well ahead of the tournament. Ask early and you will get an honest answer about what exists for your dates rather than a promise made in April.

What is the best way to see the Monaco Grand Prix?

Almost nowhere on the circuit gives you more than a few corners, so the seat decides the race you see. A harbour terrace, a Sainte Devote grandstand and yacht hospitality each show you a different part of the lap, and the yachts book earliest.

Can you book the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles yet?

Tickets and hospitality are not on sale yet. Hotels are the part you can move on now. The venues run from Long Beach to the San Fernando Valley, so the room you choose decides how much of each day is spent in a car.

Do you handle the whole trip or only the tickets?

The whole trip. Seats and hospitality are the fixed point, and the flights, hotel, transfers and the nights either side are built around them. Most sports trips have days that have nothing to do with the event, and those are usually the days people remember.

What if the event you want is not on the calendar?

Ask anyway. The calendar covers the events that come up most often, not the limit of what can be arranged.
